Strength Training for Young Wrestlers: What’s Safe and What Works

Strength training is essential for wrestlers, but parents often wonder what’s safe for young athletes. The good news: strength training, when done properly, is not only safe but extremely beneficial.

Youth wrestlers should focus on bodyweight movements first — pushups, pullups, planks, lunges, bridges, and squats. These build foundational strength needed for takedowns, defense, and control.

As wrestlers mature, they can incorporate light resistance training, such as dumbbells, kettlebells, and bands, emphasizing technique and control rather than heavy loads.

Explosive drills like sprints, jumps, and grip work boost performance without straining joints.

The key is supervision. A structured, age-appropriate program helps wrestlers become more powerful, faster, and better conditioned — all without risking injury.
